# Anchors

> Anchors align a scanned form with its template and determine its orientation during processing. ABBYY FormDesigner offers black square and corner types.

An **anchor** is an element of a machine-readable form that is used for matching a form with its template and determining its orientation during processing. Adding anchors to a form is an important stage of form design.

ABBYY FormDesigner offers two types of anchor: **black squares** and **corners**.

A form can use only one type of anchor. When you choose the anchor type, you also set its properties:

* **Size** – The length of each side of the black square or corner.
* **Line width** – The line width of each side of the corner (not applicable to black squares).
