# Exporting a Form to XML Form Definition format (*.xfd)

> Export a published form to XML Form Definition (*.xfd) so ABBYY FlexiCapture Professional can automatically create a Document Definition from it.

With ABBYY FormDesigner you can not only create a form but also automatically generate a form description that can then be used to create a Document Definition in ABBYY FlexiCapture Professional (a Document Definition tells a form processing application where to look for particular types of information on the document to ensure reliable recognition of entered data).

To create a form description, you first need to export your form to an `*.xfd` file (XML Form Definition format) and then open it in ABBYY FlexiCapture Professional – when creating a Document Definition in ABBYY FlexiCapture, simply import the created `*.xfd` file, and ABBYY FlexiCapture will automatically create the required Document Definition.

You can only export **Published** forms to XML Form Definition.

You can choose the format (TIFF or EMF) which ABBYY FormDesigner will use for saving your form image to an XFD file.

To export a form to an `*.xfd` file, use the XML Form Definition... command (**File → Export To →** XML Form Definition...). In the Export to XML Form Definition dialog box that appears, provide a name for the `*.xfd` file and browse to the folder where it will be stored.
